*Past and Present Tense
Writing in past tense is the correct way to write a story. That is just the way it is. If you ever want to publish a story professionally, it will never be considered if you write in present tense.
For those who don't know what I'm talking about, here are some examples:
Past Tense: The dog drank from the bowl and then ran away. (Good!)
Present Tense: The dog drinks from the bowl and then runs away. (Bad!)

*The Next Generation Fic
Definition: Next generation fics take place sometime in the future of the series. It can be 50 years in the future or 1,000 years. The idea of the Next Gen fic is that the main characters are now deceased or too old to do whatever it is they do and it's it's up to a new generation to take up the torch. More often than not, it is the children of the main characters or some future relations of the main cast.
Pros: A Next Gen fic can be a lot of fun. Imagining the future of your favorite fan world is full of endless possibilities. You
